What should I pack for a highland black tie event? 

This is the Ballavimus men’s checklist for what to pack for a reeling ball or any other Scottish black tie event you have when you’re wearing a kilt.

Clothes

Black (ghillie) brogues (highly polished)

Long socks (call them hose if you’re feeling fancy, shooting socks do well here)

Socks ties or Flashes (matching tartan or complementary colours)

Kilt

White marcella shirt (preferably with full collar)

Prince Charlie Jacket and Waistcoat or Doublet

Black bow tie (bonus points if made from the same material as your dinner jacket lapels)

 

Accessories

Dress sporran

Sporran chain

Kilt belt (not worn if you are wearing a waistcoat)

Shirt studs (unless your shirt has buttons)

Cufflinks

Thin wallet (with credit card, ID and cash)

Handkerchief

Detachable collar (half size up from your shirt size, only needed if your shirt does not have a collar)

Collar studs (if you’re wearing a detachable collar)

Jabot (an alternative to a bow tie, you’ll know if you want one)

 

Optional Clothes

Silk scarf

Overcoat

Your invitation or ticket

Gift for the host (if you’re meeting them there, better yet, send it by post in advance)

Compact sewing kit
