Wilhelm Jungmannand Neffe, Vienna

If you are in Vienna for the Vienna Opera Ball (Opernball) or any of the great winter balls and you're interested in men's fashion, or even need to buy a man a gift, a visit to Albertinaplatz 3 is bordering on essentail.

Wilhelm Jungmann & Neffe has been in business since 1866, making it the oldest surviving fashion salon in Vienna and one of those great European shops where the history feels genuinely lived-in rather than curated for tourists. In 1881 the company moved to its current premises beside the Hotel Sacher and was awarded the title of Imperial and Royal Purveyor to the Court. Empress Elisabeth was a client. The ceiling paintings are original.

Today the shop is run the seventh generation of the same family, and the stock reflects the same priorities it always has: fine fabrics sourced from Italian, English and French suppliers, silk and cashmere accessories, and a tie selection that runs to somewhere in the region of 6,000 options. The silks are printed exclusively for the shop. If you need a white tie bow tie or a pair of cufflinks before the ball, you could do considerably worse.

If you're looking to get something made over a long weekend you'll be dissapointed. While their prices are reasonable for bespoke work, you'll typically need at least two fitting so either treat yourself to something beautiful off the shelf or use this as an excuse to come back in the summer.

It does not have central heating, incidentally, in order to preserve the original woodwork. Which tells you most of what you need to know about the priorities of the place.
